3 Important Steps In Coffee Production

Coffee production is far from a simple process. It takes years to get from the seed that is planted to the drink in your cup. It also requires a great deal of knowledge and skill to perfect the process and get the perfect cup of coffee. There are as many variations in the process as there are producers of coffee, but there are some things that remain constant. 

Planting

There are many different methods that may be used when planting coffee. Some growers use products and chemicals to boost their production and, therefore, their profits. Some, however, prefer organically grown coffee that is planted and raised naturally with health, safety and taste in mind. After coffee is planted and has reached maturation, it must be harvested, either using a machine or by hand.

Processing

The freshly harvested coffee doesn’t yet look like the beans we grind and brew. It comes off the trees in little red berries called coffee cherries. The cherries must be processed, something that happens in different ways but ultimately has the same result. Some cherries are dried first, some dried naturally in the sun, while others have the pulp removed right away, but in the end all of the cherries are now void of their red pulp and only the bean inside remains. 

Roasting

Before coffee beans can be turned into a delicious drink, they must be roasted. There are various levels of roasting, from light to dark, and most of this roasting is done before the coffee is sold. However, if you so choose, you can buy green coffee beans and roast your own coffee at home. This will give you a unique flavor and experience. 

Not only is coffee a wonderful addition to life, but it is also the livelihood of many who grow and produce it. Being conscious about your coffee choices can have a positive impact on the lives of many.
