Well, I think you've got a real good perspective on it, Capo. I was curious what your thoughts would be so I am glad I shared this, and glad you chimed in with your perspective.

I still have both installs on my laptop, along with Windows XP Pro. I guess I ought to get off my butt and decide which to keep. The only complaint I really had with Gutsy Gibbon was the difficulty setting up Wi-Fi with the old broadband circuitry and driver in my laptop (although I finally got it to work). From what I could tell, Hardy Heron made it no easier, although I think I partly hosed its ability to when I mistakenly imported my old settings. Dumb da dumb dumb.

Again, glad to hear your thoughts, and you're right: no OS is perfect. It's just that when I heard Matt Cutts complain, I sat up and took notice because it is not the sort of thing he normally does.

Being a fledgling Ubuntu user, and so far very happy with 8.04 I was interested in the complaints and took a look. Seems primarily like issues with file sharing and possibly to be blamed on Gnome. (not that it makes much difference which component is the problem) They didn't mention it, but there's also a recent security issue with the (not so) random number generator in SSH for Debian and Ubuntu. I agree with the sentiments posted there - if Gnome has a hot new update that isn't quit ready for prime time, better to leave it out until it becomes ready. Nonetheless, I'm happy with my install - I had problems with some sort of apparent memory leak in 7.10 as well as issues with Compiz - same hardware, just a clean install of 8.04 and all is well. I guess this illustrates that no OS is going to be perfect.
