Web Resource for Prolific Technology Readers

If you do a lot of technical reading, you may be interested in Safari Online. I used it a few years ago but became to busy to justify continued use of it. But I recently decided to try it out again.

Safari Online is operated by O’Reilly, publisher of superb technical literature on a variety of topics. There are two levels of membership: you can get up to 10 books per month for about $20 per month, or an unlimited number for about $40 per month. If you get 10 books in your bookshelf and cannot read them all in a month (or get all you want out of them in a month), you can extend whichever of the books you want into the following month. Actually, even if you get just a few books, this can be a good way to save money:

For example, if you assume that an actual book costs you $25, on average, and you compare buying actual (hardcopy) books versus Safari Online, you get:

Savings with Safari Online

As you can see, the savings could be substantial. I figure I am in the 2 to 4 books per month range.

Now I don’t know if Safari is right for you or not. I don’t even know if it is right for me. But, it sure seems worth checking out, as I am doing now. By the way, you can sign up for a trial basis of two weeks.

Disclosure: Other than being a user of Safari, I am not affiliated with them in any way, nor I am affiliated with O’Reilly Publishing.
