Too Busy for Charity Work? You Can Still Do This.

Mashable has put together a list of simple and easy ways you can help change the world. Because of the importance of this article, I wanted to make sure you were aware of it, whether you subscribe to Mashable or not.

The list includes such simple but helpful activities as donating some of your spare CPU cycles and hard drive space to massive computing projects, such as the following one:

Rosetta@Home– This project uses distributed computing to discover and predict the 3-dimensional shapes of biological proteins. It may not sound terribly exciting, but learning the structures of these complex proteins can help researchers find cures for major human diseases such as HIV, Cancer, Alzheimer’s and Malaria. Check out the system requirements and download the BOINC client to participate.

I have downloaded this client and will donate some of my iMac’s power to this cause. You may also want to consider this, or some of the alternatives that Mashable describes.

I think it is great of Mashable to put together this list. If you know of additional examples that could be added to the list, please let us know in the comments.

Several of the projects that use the BOINC client are very worthy causes. I definitely suggest people do this if they can. There is also a social aspect where for most projects you can have a team of friends be in a group to compete in the rankings for number of items completed. Definitely worth checking out, and you can do work on multiple projects, so don’t feel limited! (I use BOINC from years ago for Seti@Home, but also submit work units for other causes as well). Thanks for bringing that to our attention, Bruce!

My pleasure for bringing it up, Thomas. Thanks for sharing your experience with it and for chiming in on its positive value. I am very sold on how useful it is.
