I recently posted the following on Twitter
Is your life telling the story you want to be remembered? If I watched your life, what story would I see?
As far as I know, it was only retweeted once (by my friend Ruud Hein), suggesting that people generally weren’t intrigued by it.
I think that’s because, when we first think about the answer to the question, we assume that our lives are telling a story. But, are they really? Or, do you have trouble remembering last week, because there was nothing remarkable about it, no memorable events or scenes that said something about who you are and what your story is? Perhaps this is something you can think about over the weekend. If you need help getting further motivated on it, the following book is pretty decent in describing how we can make a story from our lives: A Million Miles in a Thousand Years: What I Learned While Editing My Life. It’s what motivated me to ask myself the question, and to realize that my life is not telling the story that I want it to (and that I am not entirely sure I know what story I want it to tell).
But, you shouldn’t need a book to motivate you to do this.
I know this post sounds a little “preachy” … just remember that, when I do posts like this, I am generally preaching to myself. I also recognize, though, that there may be others like me, so I share my preaching.
