Software Compatibility Problems with Snow Leopard

With Snow Leopard on the verge of being released, I did some checking to see if my existing software applications would be compatible with it. Turns out that almost are compatible, but the following applications currently have a problem or two:

  • Evernote
  • TextMate
  • Dropbox

I would expect pretty quick resolution on at least two of these (Evernote and Dropbox), but Textmate doesn’t seem to be updated very often anymore. Perhaps that will change once Snow Leopard actually hits the streets.

Interestingly, Adobe is making big news by saying that it will not upgrade many of its older products (such as CS3) to be compatible with Snow Leopard. As AppleInsider points out, this is probably a move to get people to upgrade to their latest products.

Update: TextMate today (29 Aug 2009) issued a fix for Snow incompatibilities. However, I also learned that Google Gears is not yet compatible with Snow Leopard. I do not personally use Gears, but lots of folks do, so I hope Google does a fix soon.

    HP Photosmart C8180 All-in-One

After installing Snow Leopard the HP Scan Pro does not work. Message ‘Sorry scanner could not be initialised’ (Scanner not found).

Have not heard yet from HP about the matter. This is a 1 year-old printer/scanner and surely either Mac or HP should fix the problem?

Interesting problem, Geoff. Looks like Snow is at least recognizing that the device is a scanner (from the message it gives), or otherwise I would say that the device driver is missing (one thing Apple did to reduce the size of Snow was to delete a lot of drivers, making them available for download if needed). It still could be a driver compatibility problem, though, so hopefully HP will come through for you.

Bruce, thankyou for your reply. In spite of reporting the matter to HP twice I’ve not had a reply from them!

I did contact Mac Technical Support today and they were very helpful. It would appear that, as you suggest, it may be a driver problem ( it appears that many of the CD’s were prepared some time ago and they may be missing some important drivers). It is suggested that some software updates will be coming out in the next couple of weeks. I have a ref. number to quote and they are going to follow things through for me. Sounds good!!

Once again, Thanks for your helpful reply.

      Geoff,
It’s a shame that you haven’t heard back from HP. They used to be really good at support, but that seems like a long time ago now. Hopefully you’ll get a new driver soon.

I have the same issue with HP Scan Pro. Interestingly, though, scanner utilities like VueScan are able to access this scanner!

Just noticed the following tweet from Pogue:

Unrelated note: Having Snow Leopard print problems? HP’s Mac team is live for Q&A on HP Support Forum til 5pmPST today: http://ow.ly/oGVI

Note that this is for 9/9/09

For those with printer issues, those issues MIGHT be resolved by today’s release (9/10/09) of the 10.6.1 update to OS X.

‘Sorry scanner could not be initialised’

I found out about this problem only today when I tried to make a scan.
Tried all help files and setup programs before I ended up on this site.
I do have the latest software from HP end Snow Leopard installed.
      I have an HP C7280.

Please keep me posted, for this is VERY annoying.

      • http://www.keenerliving.com/ Bruce Keener

Wishing you good luck Jan, but I do not use an HP printer or scanner, so not very likely to come across anything specifically related to your problem. (In fact, the only printing and scanning I do is done through a Dell Printer attached to my Dell laptop.)

  • Ken Davis

If you have a Mac running Snow Leopard, you can use image capture that you have already to scan with a HP C8180. Just run it and select the 8180 as the device to use. You can use this software for connected cameras also. Scan does a GREAT job.

So far I have not gotten any reaction at all from HewlittPackard or Apple concerning this problem, but I managed to solve the problem regarding the inability of the system to find the scanner in my HP C7280 system in the following way.

Repair of scanner capability under Snow Leopard.
    1. Uninstall all HP software from your Applications folder, use the uninstaller from HP, which you can find in that folder.
    2. Download “HewlittPackardPrinterDrivers2.2.dmg” from the Apple site (NOT from HP, do NOT use the HP drivers from any HP site!); http://support.apple.com/kb/DL907 (I used the September 21, 2009 version 2.2, 383 MB, Download ID; DL907).
    3. Install the above mentioned .dmg file.
    4. From now on you can select the “Apple” printer driver when you open a program like Word or Aperture. In my case I had to choose the “HP C7200 series” as the default printer. All printer functions of the C7280, like two sided printing etc., will work.

    To SCAN:
    1. Click on the Apple symbol on your Desktop.
    2. Open “System Preferences”
    3. Choose “Hardware, Print & Fax”
    4. Choose “Scan”
    5. Choose “Open Scanner”
    6. Choose your scan mode “Document feeder” or “Flatbed”
    7. Scan

VERY helpful, Jan. Thank you for sharing it.

I have tried downloading the HP driver from the apple support website above and it gets to the last minute and doesn’t go any further. any suggestions? I’ve tried it three times.

      Thank you.

  • Mary PB

Having the same scannin problem with my HP C4480 after installing Snow Leopard, I followed the suggestion above and downloaded the (big) dmg file. [Thank you, Jan.] I was able to scan one document, but, when I tried to do a second one, I ended up having to turn the printer off before it would scan again. I wish I could scan the “old,” automatic way and not have to go through preferences, etc. However, I am happy to have a way that works!

  • Aimee

I’ve tried the above 2x and am still not able to scan. I upgraded to Snow Leopard and have a C7280. Any other tips? This is so time consuming and frustrating!

    • http://www.keenerliving.com/ Bruce Keener

I am not aware of anything else you can Aimee. Perhaps someone else will chime in. Good luck.

      • Aimee

I just got it to work! Thank you for the tips. The second time, I re-installed the software, I didn’t check off HP duplex printing. Hence, under system – print &fax – I didn’t have a scan option. And with Preview & Image capture “import from scanner” wouldn’t work.

I just checked off duplex printing and after re-reading all the tips chose FLATBED printing and finally success. Thank you!

      • http://www.keenerliving.com/ Bruce Keener

Great news, Aimee. Thanks for the feedback and thanks to everyone who helped out with this and other solutions!

This may be repetition or inapplicable, in which case apologies in advance.
Make sure your printer is visible in the Settings pane for Print&Fax. If not, click on + and see if you can add it. It ought to be connected via USB and on.

Once your printer has been recognized by OsX, start up Preview and select File>Import from Scanner>Your Scanner type here.
This ought to work. Going through the HP or other supplied software seems not to work for me.
The Twain interface stuff these programs use doesn’t work for me on Snow Leopard.
    Good luck

      Very helpful. Thank you Marc.

Jan — thank you so much for posting. That just put an end to about a months’ worth of low-grade angst…

  • Ken M

I had the same scanning problem with C7280 (using OSX 10.6.2) I downloaded both the HP Printer drivers from Apple and the HP software from HP site. This took a long time. Contacted HP on 1300721147 (Australia). Tech guy said to uninstall any HP apps (and then check for any HP apps left and drag them to trash & empty), before installing new software. I then installed the drivers. Chose C7200 series as the printer in System Prefs. The scanning app is ‘HP Scan’ and works well and although the ‘HP Photosmart Studio’ app wasn’t reinstalled with the new software my earlier scans using this program were still saved in the ‘Photo scans’ folder. Thanks to everyone above for getting me on the right track although I did it slightly differently.

Thanks for adding your experience in, Ken. Much appreciated.

  • http://na Rene

downloading the drivers from the apple website didn’t resolve the issue. still can’t print. so is this an hp or apple problem? has anyone been able to resolve?

    • http://www.keenerliving.com/ Bruce Keener

      Hi Rene,
I personally do not have a solution for you, but it looks like the comments above provide a lot of good advice. You might scan them just one more time to see if there’s something you haven’t tried.

Sorry I couldn’t offer personal advice on it.
