Site Status Update

Just giving you a few quick updates on this site:

  • The move to a new server has gone very well. I’ve been informed that the DNS changes have completed propagating throughout the DNS backbone, so everyone should be arriving at the new server now.
  • After just telling you a few days ago that I was adding Skribit back to the sidebar, for your use in suggesting topics to me, I have removed it tonight. The reason: it slows down page loading a lot: it requires loading 250KB of javascript. That exceeds, by a considerable amount, what a total page size should be. (Web authors should aim to have pages that are less than 100KB in size, including javascript and images.) So, sorry to jerk you around on this. The impact it has on page loading is just unacceptable, though. I don’t want to drive people away because of slow page loading times (or for any other reason). You can, of course, still suggest topics to me. Just use the contact form (see the menu at the top of the page.)

A few final points on the server:

  • I want to thank my new host provider, Tiger Technologies, for their awesome hosting and for fantastic support in making the transition to their server. This is the same company that hosts Search Engine Land, a site that receives an extraordinary amount of traffic (deservedly so).
  • Speaking of Search Engine Land, I very much appreciate Danny Sullivan taking the time to reply to my email to let me know I would be making an excellent move to go with Tiger Technologies.
  • I also want to thank my former host provider, Bluehost, for the service they provided me with for almost a year and for being so helpful and professional during my transition to a new server.

Again, sorry to jerk you around on Skribit. I have to keep the total user experience in mind, and page loading times are an important part of the total experience.
