Parallel Universes (and This One)

A heads-up that TV’s History Channel will have a show this evening on Parallel Universes. The blog Not Even Wrong suggests that the show’s producers might be leaving out some qualifiers. The blog emphasizes that the concept of parallel universes is untested science, rather than tested science. While parallel universes are not proven, my view is that they probably exist … why should we believe this is the only universe?

Update: I agree with Peter Woit’s follow-up blog post that the show was terrible. While parallel universes are a very real possibility, they remain a possibility and not fact in current science. There is a great deal of controversy over the multiverse theories, and over string-theory (or M-theory as it is often called). For the History Channel to indicate that they are proven science is poor journalism. For that reason, I regret having suggested that you watch the channel. However, I do not regret bringing up topics to help us open up our minds. We have to watch that we not regard speculation as fact, though.

At any rate, while I was searching in this universe for an image to put into this site’s header, I found the following in Robert Scoble’s Flickr account:

One side of Shenzhen’s city hall glimmers in the sunset

This is from Robert’s recent trip to China. A lovely picture, isn’t it? I really appreciate that Robert makes all his Flickr images available in the public domain … Thanks Robert!
