My Buster B Guitar

I have been blessed all of my life: a wonderful family, knowing several truly exceptional people, having several talents, having a good income, and so on. And I continue to be blessed, with my latest blessing being a new Godin Mulitac Nylon SA guitar autographed by none other than the legendary Buster B Jones. Below is a picture of Buster signing my new guitar:

Is that cool or what? Buster, if you are reading this, you know I do not have the words to adequately express my appreciation to you. Not only are you the best guitarist in the world, you are a helluva great guy. You know my Dad would have loved to have seen this!

Until yesterday, it had been 8 or 9 years since I’ve played a nylon-stringed guitar, so I am still getting up to speed on it. Plus, I’ve come down with a miserable head and chest cold. Nonetheless, I thought I’d share one tune of me picking a made-up tune on it:

Whether you like my picking or not, you will like Buster’s: he is at least 100 times better than me. At least.

Buster set the action on my Multiac to perfection, so it plays wonderfully, and he played it for several days to make sure it was broken-in good. Here is a picture of him playing it:

In my opinion, Buster is one of the best guitarists in the world. He can play anything from Metallica to Beethoven, and he is one of the best Jerry-Reed-style pickers in the universe. Not only can he play everything that Jerry ever played, he embellishes the dickens out of Jerry’s stuff, too. Head over to his MySpace page, http://www.myspace.com/busterbjones, and give a listen to him playing “Variations on the Claw” and “Steeplechase Lane,” two of Jerry’s tunes. I also encourage you to head over to CD Baby and check out the CD A Decade of Buster B Jones. My experience with CD Baby is that, even when they say an item is out of stock, it generally gets in stock pretty darned quick. Also, you can purchase individual tunes from Buster’s MySpace page. He has around 100 tunes available for download now, and mentioned to me that he will be adding about 200 more. I guarantee you will like his stuff, a lot.

I have learned a lot from Buster’s instructional videos. For fellow guitarists who would like to learn from Buster, you can get his latest instructional DVD by contacting him via the contact link on his website: http://www.busterbjones.com/. He mentioned to me that he will be modifying his MySpace page so that you can get his instructional videos from there, too.

Well, you can tell I am excited about my new “Buster B Guitar” and you can tell I am a big fan of Buster’s. He’s an incredible guitarist and also a very good teacher of guitar. Like Jerry Reed, he can pick Jerry Reed Stuff coming and going, and he is also very creative like Jerry was. He comes up with some fantastic guitar licks and tunes.

As I get more accustomed to playing my new Multiac, and after I get over this miserable cold, I’ll record and upload some more tunes. I may also re-record some of the ones I’ve already uploaded, like Struttin’ and a few others that are really meant to be played on a nylon string guitar instead of an acoustic.

Take care.

Bruce, sorry to hear you’re sick, hope you get to feeling better soon. Well, that makes me wish I’d kept one of my Godins. Loved the tune and it sounds like you are back up to speed on the nylon strings. Nice of Buster to set it up, break it in and sign it. The couple of times that I met him, he was very nice and seems like a good person. He and one of his students (Brooks) came to our fingerstyle fest in NC several years. Wish we able to have it this year. I’m really going to miss that. One good memory was sitting in a room with about 20 other pickers and listening to Buster and Thom play for about an hour. Take care and let’s hear some more tunes.

    Hi Ray,
Great to hear from you. Thank you for the well wishes and for the compliment on the tune … I really am still not up to speed, which is why I stuck with such a simple tune, but I sure appreciate the compliment. When I get over this stinking cold I’ll pick a lot more, I’m sure.

Yeah, Buster is really a great guy. And he did one hell of a job in teaching Brooks, didn’t he? Sorry the NC fingerstyle fest was cancelled this year … what a bummer. Maybe it will come back next year.
