Just moments ago, I downloaded Dragon Dictation and began using it on my iPhone. It was not perfect in converting my short message to text, but it did pretty good:
This e-mail was created with dragon dictation and amp for the iPhone available now for free in the iTunes store
The bolded part should have said “an app” instead of “and amp.” But, other than that, it did very good, not to have yet had time to get trained to my voice.
I am amazed that this app is free. One has to speak slowly into it, but it clearly can save a lot of typing. I expect to use a fair amount.
You can download it at this iTunes Link.
Update: Some people are complaining that the app transmits data to the cloud for processing, rather than doing it on the iPhone, and that it also transmits your contact information (since names of contacts are likely to be something you would want to convert to text, during some of your dictation). I have learned that the only part of the contact information that is transmitted to the cloud is the contact name (no address or telephone or other information). Obviously the reason for that is to speed up processing of contact names in converting the dictation to text. I don’t consider this a big deal. Some people do.
Update 2 (16 Dec 2009): An update to the Dragon Dictation app lets one avoid having contacts uploaded, and also allows deletion of previously uploaded contacts. Good to see the responsiveness on complaints. Should become a very highly-rated app now, because it is very useful.
