If You Are Thinking of Buying an iPhone or iPod Touch

Thinking of buying an iPhone or iPod Touch? These articles might help you make a decision.

  • Forget the iPhone — the iPod Touch is Good Enough
Kevin Purdy of Lifehacker talks about how he saved money by getting the iPod Touch instead of the iPhone, sticking to his clunker cell phone, and losing little functionality in the process. Note that new apps continue to make the iPod Touch even more viable. For example, Kevin mentions jailbreaking would enable SSH on the touch, but now jailbreaking is not necessary for that … there are at least three SSH apps in the iTunes App Store. (I have one of these on my Touch.)
  • iPod Touch as a PDA and Entertainer
My own popular review of the iPod Touch as a PDA. I personally use the Touch as my PDA, and I am very pleased with it. Of course, the iPhone gives the same PDA capabilities plus more.
  • Rant: I think I now hate my iPhone
Joel of Geek.com goes through the reasons why the newest iPhone (the 3G model) disappoints him. Not having an iPhone, I can not weigh on his experience on way or the other, but he seems to represent the views of a lot of 3G iPhone owners.
  • Engadget’s iPhone 3G Review
This is a much more positive, and thorough, review than the Geek.com rant. If I did not already have the iPod Touch, this review would really have me thinking about getting a 3G iPhone. Of course, I am not dismissing Geek.com’s rant, as battery life and 3G problems are a concern of a lot of iPhone users.
  • A comprehensive review of iPhone e-book options
Teleread has a comprehensive, and I mean comprehensive, review of four iPhone/Touch e-book readers.
  • Use an iPhone or Touch to Control Your Mac or PC
Another of my articles, this one intended to indicate some of the variety of apps available for the iPhone/Touch.
  • A few more thoughts on the iPod Touch 2.0
Another of my articles, covering the use of a few specific apps on my Touch.

Of course Apple continues to work on improving the 3G iPhone experience. A 2.1 software update is rumored for September, and some hardware upgrades to the Touch line are also rumored (supposedly will be shaped more like the iPhone, for one thing).

For those of you who have an iPhone/Touch, it sure would be helpful for you to add your experiences and thoughts into the comments.
