Kevin Purdy of Lifehacker talks about how he saved money by getting the iPod Touch instead of the iPhone, sticking to his clunker cell phone, and losing little functionality in the process. Note that new apps continue to make the iPod Touch even more viable. For example, Kevin mentions jailbreaking would enable SSH on the touch, but now jailbreaking is not necessary for that … there are at least three SSH apps in the iTunes App Store. Of course Apple continues to work on improving the 3G iPhone experience. A 2.1 software update is rumored for September, and some hardware upgrades to the Touch line are also rumored (supposedly will be shaped more like the iPhone, for one thing).
