From the Heart

As most of us gear up for the Thanksgiving Holidays, I hope we all make the time to be truly thankful, from our hearts.

I confess to not having been good at this over the years. It is so easy to just take what we have for granted. And it’s easy to only half mean it when we do express our gratitude.

I recall too many times when I would set down to eat and briefly express gratitude for my food, only to follow that with the thought “Jesus, Keener, everybody has food.” Well, no, Keener: everybody does not have food. And, even if they did, we are individually blessed to have whatever we have.

When we recognize that we could easily have been born into horrid circumstances, or that they could befall us at any time, then we are on the way to being able to have true gratitude.

In my old age, I am, finally, truly grateful. (It was a long time coming for me, and there’s still room to improve.) I hope that, if you are not grateful, that you do not wait until my age to become so.

Here’s to your enjoyment and safety throughout the holidays!
