Fingerstyle Guitar Tunes

I’ve been playing Jerry Reed and Chet Atkins style guitar since I was a pup, and decided to make several of my tunes available for you.

I’ve been complimented on my playing by top guitarists Mark Pritcher (president of the Chet Atkins Appreciation Society), the legendary Buster B. Jones, and several others. Of course, there’ll be some of my picking that you just won’t care for, but I hope you like most of it.

Over 70 of the tunes are in video format, and are available on my YouTube channel. An example is my Jerry Reed-ish rendering of Wabash Cannonball:

Several tunes that I have done in regular audio format are provided below as mp3′s. Some of these are my originals, some are old standards (like Amazing Grace).

All tunes were recorded with a USB microphone plugged into my iMac. For portions of some tunes, I use a second track to harmonize with myself.

You can freely download the following tunes for your own use.

  • Farther Along, one of my favorite gospel songs.
  • Dutchess, a tune in memory of a former pet (a very sweet dog)
  • Mood and Funk, a tune that starts out with some peaceful mood music, then moves into some Jerry Reed style funk.
  • God Is God, based on a song written by the late Truman Mulkey (if memory serves) and recorded by my Mom and Dad on one of their Country Gospel Albums years and years ago.
  • Putzin Around, another Keener original. This was a fun tune to play.
  • D Major Ditty, another Keener Original (as far as I know).
  • Rhythm Guitar, a funky little tune that I wanted to record before I forgot it. The Alvarez strings are way dead, but that adds to the funkiness of the tune. (Note that this is an original … unfortunately it bears the same name as different tune that Jerry Reed wrote, even though the two are not at all similar.)
  • Just A Closer Walk With Thee
  • Really Short Ditty, a short tune I whipped up on my Gallagher.

I’m a guitarist myself – well done! I was just listening to ‘Walking With Vickie’ – very whimsical. Reminds me a lot of Pat Kirtley.

Thank you, capo! I especially like “Walking With Vickie.’ That and ‘Putzin Around’ are my faves of the above.

Just to show you how out of touch I can be at times, I had to google Pat Kirtley … had no idea who he was and it sounds like he is one of the best. I’ll have to obtain some of his recordings, and hopefully can pick up some good licks from listening to him.

I noticed in reading about one of his CDs that he has a Gallagher. I inherited one from my late Dad, serial number 777 of all things. Should be played more than I play it. Guess I ought to get it out of the box more often. I remember going with Dad, thirty or so years ago, to Wartrace Tennessee to pick it up at the factory. It has a beautiful deep sound and I should play it more often … really need to restring it.

Also have a Gretsch Country Gentleman. Played it a few days ago for the first time in about a year, and it was a challenge to get re-accustomed to playing it after having played an acoustic for so long. I think I’ll play it a bit more today and maybe some more later this week. May eventually record a few tunes with it. Sweet guitar.

My arsenal is much more pedestrian I’m afraid. A 50th anniversary Strat American Deluxe, a ten year old Strat American Standard, a Taylor 314CE, an Ovation Celebrity Deluxe and a couple more that don’t bear mentioning. I’m pretty satisfied with the sound of my Taylor in the acoustic realm but I’d love to have something with the tone of your Gretsch on electric. I have a couple of Pat’s CD’s – he reminds me a bit of Chet sometimes. Not so much his sound, just the way he plays difficult passages so flawlessly. I wish I had something more impressive recorded to share with you, but my CD is unfinished. I do have some ratty bedroom recordings on my website if you’re interested though – http://www.lancegallup.com.
