If you go back to the very first page of this blog, you will find that my 3rd post asked the question
“If you could have only one app on your Pocket PC or Palm, what should it be?”
and that I answered, for me, that one app would be eWallet.
Well, my answer to that question is still the same. For me, eWallet is an indispensable tool, and the good folks at Ilium Software keep making it better and better. They have just released version 6.0, which has several new features, including:
- Government-level encryption: eWallet now uses the 256-bit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) for encryption, and is FIPS compliant on key platforms as required by US government agencies.
- Two ways to view your data: using Flex View for an easy-to-browse list, or Card View so your data looks like it’s on real cards.
- Personalized cards: There are over 200 new icons, and 10 card background graphics, available as free downloads on the Ilium site.
- eWallet security for other important documents: insert files into your wallet and eWallet will encrypt them, then easily extract when you need them.
- Automatic backups: tell eWallet to create a backup of your wallet file each time you close or lock the program.
- Open FlexWallet files instantly in eWallet: FlexWallet files are recognized and automatically converted on the desktop.
And, as if this wasn’t enough:
- eWallet 6 is accompanied by the eWallet Web Companion, which is currently in public beta. This is a web-based companion application that lets eWallet users view eWallet information on any device with a web browser and internet connection, including an iPhone, iPod Touch, Blackberry, and Nintendo Wii. Users can synchronize their data with the Web Companion and have instant, secure access to their wallets.
- Ilium has a partnership with WebIS to combine FlexWallet and eWallet into one program. eWallet 6.0 combines features of FlexWallet and eWallet, bringing greater security and more features to all of our users.
Is that cool or what? I have not tried the Web Companion yet, but will do so later this week and I am looking forward to having my eWallet (and FlexWallet) data available for viewing on my BlackBerry Curve.
In addition to using eWallet, I have experimented with FlexWallet and had some data in it. I used the new eWallet to open that data and it worked absolutely flawlessly. And, I am impressed with the huge choice of icons, which includes several new icons from Ilium Software as well as a slew of icons from FlexWallet:

Anyway, I thought you would be interested in knowing about this significant eWallet update: A great tool just got even better.

Neat, Bruce. I love eWallet and have used it on my Palm as well as my Pocket PC. I would love for them to come out with a BlackBerry version, now that they’re going to also take over FlexWallet (which has a BB version).
I’m looking forward to the web companion program, since there is no BlackBerry version yet. I hope that they’ll add a native client to the BB eventually, so all my data is in sync across platforms. I also like that you can synchronize your data to a secure backup location, such as your own server that supports SFTP (secure transfer).
The only issue I have with the synchronization is that it only works via the desktop program – I cannot have the sync work directly from the BB (at least in version 5, haven’t tried out version 6 yet). This is excellent, though. Thanks for sharing!
Hi Thomas,
Sinful me, I still haven’t tried out the web companion syncing, and have been really lazy this week … I would suspect though that it addresses the sync issue you noted at the end.
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks, Bruce. I really hope so. I’ve signed up to be added to the list of beta testers for the new web companion. Hopefully, I’ll get an invite soon!
