That’s what Father Joe told Scully in the film The X-Files: I Want To Believe.
She asked what he meant and he said he didn’t know. She must have wondered whether it meant to not give up treating her patient who had Sandhoff disease, despite the desires of her boss and despite the virtually zero probability of a cure. She may have wondered if it meant not giving up on Mulder. Or perhaps it meant not giving up on her faith, despite all the evil, suffering, and despair in the world.
Regardless of what it was intended to mean in the movie, I mention it because a lot of people are giving up in these difficult economic times. We all wonder at times whether some of our goals and dreams are worth the effort, or even remotely achievable even if they are worthwhile. Sometimes we just need to be reminded of the power of tenacity and persistence.
