Customize your Smartphone start menu

Customizing Your Smartphone MenuOne of the few things that initially annoyed me about the T-Mobile Dash was its Start Menu. The operating system put stuff at the top of the menu that I didn’t care about, like:

  • Communications Manager
  • Email Setup Utility
  • Other things that you use once and then pay little attention to

And, new programs that I added to the Dash, such as Agenda One and Documents To Go and SKTools Lite, showed at or near the bottom. Hence I had to scroll through several items to get the programs I wanted.

While not a huge issue, especially since recently run programs are put at the top of the screen, it was an annoyance every time I restarted the device or when I wanted to launch a program I hadn’t recently launched.

I tried using File Explorer to create some new folders and rearrange items within them, but found that it wouldn’t let me cut and paste the built-in programs.

But, I found the perfect utility to address this issue: Jeyo Personalizer. It does just what I need, and it’s Free.

My hunch is that the Start Menu problem is not limited to the Dash: I suspect it is a result of the Smartphone operating system. Hence, users of all Smartphones might also benefit from this utility. I do not know this to be a fact, but it doesn’t hurt to check it out.

By the way, when I first ran it, the operating system displayed a message that the software was designed for an earlier operating system and might not work. But, it works just fine.

A final “by the way” on this: in searching for this utility, I discovered that one can accomplish the same thing by changing some registry settings. Even though I am experienced in changing registry settings, there is always risk associated with doing so, so I decided to just let the utility do the work for me.

    Hi stevo,

No, I have not used the sound utility. In fact a few months after writing this, I switched to using a BlackBerry and will probably transition to an iPhone when my contract is renewed.

I do not know of any sound utilities, off hand, although it seems like I have seen some discussed on various Pocket PC sites … I just can’t recall for sure.

    Best of luck with it.

I recently had to do a master reset on my Samsung Jack and most of the settings were erased. Before in my start menu, it would memorize the last application used and would put it at the beginning of the list. Now I have to scroll through a lot of applications that I don’t use on a regular basis to get to what I want.
I have called my provider and they referred me to Samsung and then in turn Samsung referred me back to my provider.

Does anyone know how I could resolve this?
