Bye-Bye to Some Distractions

This morning I asked myself “Why do I have accounts on FaceBook and Twitter?” I could not give myself a good answer. Both seem to be a complete waste of my time.

So, I am pulling the plug on both. For some people these social media applications are no doubt useful, maybe even valuable. Many people smarter than me are forecasting big things for these types of social media applications. These applications are already enormously popular and getting more so each day. But I have enough sources of information, and I stay reasonably well in touch with my friends. So, for me, FaceBook and Twitter are just unnecessary distractions. For you, they may be the greatest thing since sliced bread and something that is worth your time. We all have to manage how we spend our time, and my view is that my time is better spent without these apps.

Anyway, speaking of unnecessary distractions, I have gotten tired of seeing the same stories over and over in my feed reader. First one blog reports a story, then another blog reports that another blog reported that story, and then another one, and so on. It’s nuts. So, I deleted a handful of the “me too” blogs out of my feeds. I may trim more in time.

What about you? Do you feel “over-connected” and deluged with too much information, much of it redundant and without value?

Agreed. I regularly review blogs (my own as well as others) and trim/delete/disconnect as appropriate. All these sources of information use mental (and other) resources and I think it’s wise to review them periodically to see if you’re getting a good ROI. I pulled the plug on “the news” a long time ago and found my life improved as a result. Tim Ferriss suggests the same thing, but I thought of it first :-) .

Hi capo. Glad to have you back.

It already feels better to have disconnected from some of “the noise.”
