Ask The Readers: Recording to YouTube [Music]

Several musicians have emailed me asking if I have written tabs for the music I’ve recorded, and I’ve had to tell them “no.” When a musician asks this, what he or she wants to know is how you are playing the tune: what notes are being picked and chorded and in what order (and with which fingers). Tabs are great … I’ve learned a lot from them.

I don’t have the patience to tab my music. And, frankly, I’ve probably forgotten how to play some of what I composed and recorded a year ago.

But, I do want people to be able to learn from me, just as I want to be able to learn from them. In this regard, I have thought about making some YouTube videos of me playing selected tunes. A couple of these would be done in a tutorial style.

Thing is, I’ve never done any video recording and the only time I fool with YouTube is when I am watching something on it. I do not yet have the technical knowledge I need to pull this off.

My previous audio recordings have been done with my iMac using Garageband, and with no video input. But, since I just got a new laptop that has a webcam built into it, I am thinking of using it. (My previous laptop died.) I do not have any corresponding audio recording software for the Windows Vista laptop, so I would probably have to get something like CakeWalk.

So, if any of my fellow musicians can offer me some technical advice on this, I sure would appreciate it. I am particularly interested in hearing how well CakeWalk (or other audio recording software) integrates with a Dell laptop webcam.

Thank you.

To everyone: have a blessed, safe, and enjoyable weekend.

Hi, Bruce. I still haven’t been able to get my Calkwalk software to work with Vista. My friend that does video and audio stuff hasn’t been able to get it to work either. So, I’m probably no help, sorry.

Hi, Ray. Good to hear from you.

Sorry it’s not working out with Cakewalk on Vista. Guess I might have to give up the idea of that. I tried to see what help they have on their site, but they seem more interested in selling their hardware than their software.
