Several musicians have emailed me asking if I have written tabs for the music I’ve recorded, and I’ve had to tell them “no.” When a musician asks this, what he or she wants to know is how you are playing the tune: what notes are being picked and chorded and in what order (and with which fingers). Tabs are great … I’ve learned a lot from them.
I don’t have the patience to tab my music. And, frankly, I’ve probably forgotten how to play some of what I composed and recorded a year ago.
But, I do want people to be able to learn from me, just as I want to be able to learn from them. In this regard, I have thought about making some YouTube videos of me playing selected tunes. A couple of these would be done in a tutorial style.
Thing is, I’ve never done any video recording and the only time I fool with YouTube is when I am watching something on it. I do not yet have the technical knowledge I need to pull this off.
My previous audio recordings have been done with my iMac using Garageband, and with no video input. But, since I just got a new laptop that has a webcam built into it, I am thinking of using it. (My previous laptop died.) I do not have any corresponding audio recording software for the Windows Vista laptop, so I would probably have to get something like CakeWalk.
So, if any of my fellow musicians can offer me some technical advice on this, I sure would appreciate it. I am particularly interested in hearing how well CakeWalk (or other audio recording software) integrates with a Dell laptop webcam.
Thank you.
To everyone: have a blessed, safe, and enjoyable weekend.
