Chasing Down Some Strange Errors

July 17, 2008

For the past few weeks, I have been trying to figure out what is causing some strange errors to show up in my Google Webmaster Tools Reports. It appears that the errors are false, that they go away, and that they then return a few days later.

I am deep into troubleshooting this, and am getting some help from Google (via their forums) to figure out what is going on. One possibility could even be that it is related to mobile viewing and that Google’s mobile bot may be impacted by that. To test that out, I have disabled mobile viewing. I know that most of you do not care, but that a few of you care very much. Hence, I wanted to apologize upfront to those of you who will be inconvenienced.

On a semi-related matter, I will be upgrading the blogging software to Wordpress 2.6 soon. I am reluctant to do so right now, because the traffic is pretty heavy … so I will try to wait until Saturday morning. It could turn out, though, that it is smart for me to go ahead and upgrade as a part of the troubleshooting process. Bottom line is: whenever I do this, the site will be unavailable for about 20 minutes or so. Update: upgrade completed.

Anyway, if you see “features” disappear (like mobile viewing, Subscribing to Comments, or other goodies), please understand that I am trying to track down a bug that is driving me crazy (short drive).

Have a really good weekend folks!

@Bruce: “…whenever I do this, the site will be unavailable for about 20 minutes or so.”

Then you’re better at this then I am. It often takes me *hours* to get my blog functional after upgrading WordPress, which is one of the reasons I drag my feet about upgrading.

@Bill, I've had a lot of practice with it on my test server. In fact, I installed a plugin last night that supposedly will do all the work for me, and make the upgrade quickly. We'll see …
