iPhone and Touch Updates: Let’s Learn Together

July 10, 2008

Well news has literally made it all over the web that the iTunes App Store is now open! There are lots of sources you can check, including Lifehacker and MacRumors, but you probably have your favorites and you may learn some tips and tricks from them to share with us.

I have just upgraded iTunes to 7.7, which is necessary for connecting to the App Store, and downloaded the free eReader app. However, I have yet to find the 2.0 firmware upgrade for my iPod Touch. Presumably it will be available in the store shortly, I will grab it, and then will post more information as I try out some apps. Update: Still unavailable, even late this July 10 afternoon. Looks like it is not going to be available for the Touch until July 11. Several sites point to a 2.0 firmware file that works for the iPhone, but not the Touch.

What I thought we’d do with this post is just open it up for comments and tips from you guys and gals. I know some of you, like Thomas and Capo, are already all over this and are learning new tips by the minute. Hence, if you’d like to share, here’s a spot for you to do so.

I have some errands today, and will not be fully available until this afternoon. In the meantime, please chime in with your tips, comments, favorite apps, questions, and so on. It’ll be a good way for us to learn from each other, and that is really what I have always wanted this blog to be about.

BTW, if any of you come across a screen capture utility, I’d like to know about it. That would let me take some screen shots to share with you.

I’m off the beaten track on this one - still running the 1.1.1 firmware on my iTouch. It’s been jailbroken almost since the day I bought it, and though I keep a close eye on the available apps, I’ve only installed a few of them. I use my iPod mostly for music (what a novel concept!) so a lot of what’s offered just doesn’t appeal to me. When Apple offers something really compelling via iTunes I’ll probably update everything, but right now I’m satisfied.

Interesting, capo. I would have thought the jailbreakers would make a mad rush to the app store and firmware 2.0, but, now that I think about it: if you’re happy with what you have, why change?

For those who do not read Daring Fireball, definitely add it to your feeds.

For example, he mentions something from Gina Trapani stating how you can take screenshots with the new OS. Basically, you hold down the home button and press the lock button and the screen will flash and a screenshot is stored to your camera roll. Neat!
