Tech News Update 29 May 2008

May 29, 2008

Most of the tech articles I’ve seen recently have made me yawn. Only the following really caught my attention:

  • Google announces App Engine pricing
I’m delighted to see making some of its cloud computing framework available for developers. Like with Amazon’s S3 and EC2, this has the potential to dramatically influence the scalability and utility of the web in the coming the years. [source: Mashable]
  • Amazon cutting Kindle price by 10%
This is good to see, of course (except for the early adopters who already spent the 400 bucks). I personally suspect the iPhone and Touch will be ultimately be the best-selling “ebook readers,” once ebooks really do start becoming available for them. [source: jkOnTheRun]
  • Even more leaked 3G iPhone photos
Rumors continue to mount that the 3G iPhone is right around the corner, with June 9 being the date I’ve seen most rumored. Of course, at that time, the 2.0 platform would supposedly be available, and this would include availability for existing iPhones and iPod Touch devices. [source: Engadget]
  • Free virtualization from Sun
Although I have no reason to give up VMware Fusion as my virtualization software, it is good to see a freebie enter the market. [source: Web Worker Daily]
  • Resco Explore 2008 for Pocket PC released
I love Resco Explorer. Good to see that the developers are continuing to add neat features to it.
  • For fellow Mac users, Leopard 10.5.3 is now available, in case you haven’t already installed it. It weighs in at 198MB and has a slew of fixes and tweaks.

Update: TechCrunch has an indepth summary of Google’s I/O conference for developers. I know several of you are professional developers, and must really be enthusiastic about some of what Google is doing. Even I, as a hobbyist developer, am excited about it.
