In Love with the iPod Touch

by Bruce Keener on March 2, 2008

Looking at a picture of an iPod Touch does not give you a fair impression of what a gorgeous device it is. I picked up a 16GB version today, and the screen is just absolutely stunning.

It synced perfectly with everything I already had on iTunes, gave me a few free downloads, and automatically did the 1.1.4 firmware update.

I still have much to test out on it. For example, I have not browsed with it yet, because my wireless connection is hosed up. I even bought a new Linksys router today to attempt to solve that, but to no avail so far. Guess I’ll be spending some time on the phone with the Linksys folks.

Also, I have not yet used the option to sync to iCal and Address Book, although I will do so over the course of the next several hours. I first need to make sure I have everything from Outlook synced over to my Mac (it’s close, but not complete), and then I will sync it all to the Touch.

Why not just get an iPhone instead, you ask? Well, I really want to see what the 3G version is like, once it finally comes out. Once 3G is working well on an iPhone, and complaints about battery life seem to have been addressed, then I suppose I will fork out the money for an iPhone, too. So far the experience with the Touch makes me think I will be very happy with doing so, but, as I noted earlier, I still have much to test out.

After a few days use I’ll give you an update on my impressions of the Touch.

Congrats, Bruce. I’m definitely interested to hear your full impressions of the Touch. Looks like you’re happy with your purchase! I think it’s wise to see how the iPhone 3G will work - battery life is pretty important.

Hi Thomas, thanks for the congrats. Definitely a cool device. I got the wireless working just long enough to test out on the Touch and was very impressed with Gcal and so on. Keener Living views pretty well on the Touch, although I think I may increase the font size for Touch and iPhone readers. It’s readable but a bit small.

Setting up wireless is ruining some of the fun of this for me. Trying to set up a Linksys to work with Mac and Windows is turning into a pain in the butt. I am supposed to go into Bridge mode on the modem, but that seems to hose up the general configuration after about 10 minutes of operating. Tomorrow will be a day of working with AT&T and Linksys to get this danged thing to work right. Guess I could check around and see if there are routers that work better with multiple systems.

Anyhoo, I’ll do a writeup on the Touch in a few days.

Bruce..I am busy getting my husband ready to head out of town for a few days…..or I’d get on the phone and walk you through the set up (I have done it many times for myself and others).

Check out Linksys forums http://forums.linksys.com/linksys/board?board.id=Wireless_Routers
Lots of helpful info there.

I will check back with you after the dust settles around here…and see if you need help still!! Do NOT get on the phone with the service people…all you will get is a headache! :)

Thanks Susan! I may have to ask for your help, but will read the forums first. I appreciate the link.

I’ll start reading them in the morning. About time for me and the dogs to call it a night. Been a long day. A mostly good one, except for the wireless hassles, but long nonetheless.

Thanks again!
