What Saying Resonates Most With You?

by Bruce Keener on September 18, 2007

in Perspective

We all have innumerable sayings floating around in our heads. Some came from our readings of scriptures and inspirational texts, biographies and autobiographies, and of course from our families and friends. Some are motivational and inspiring and some are just plain silly. In many cases they cannot be proved or disproved, but to really ring true.

The one that resonates most with me, and that will move me from feeling sorry for myself to taking action, is

To whom much is given, much is required.

This saying of Jesus seems to me to convey a very deep truth. I cannot prove that it is true, but I feel that it is with every fiber of my being. It tells me that I, a person who has been very blessed, have no right to “do nothing.” It inspires me to move from inaction to action.

What about you? What saying really resonates within you and inspires and motivates you?

Interesting topic. I have heard / read many sayings from many sources. If you have a chance, check out this website http://www.freemaninstitute.com/quotes.htm

My favorite quote, that has stayed with me the longest is “So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you” (Mat 7:12 NIV)

So why has this quote endured in my mind, even in the midst of the others that I have seen or heard? I’m not sure. I guess it’s my upbringing.

There is one other saying that brings a smile -

“I have traveled the length and breadth of this country and talked with the best people, and I can assure you that data processing is a fad that won’t last out the year.”
–The editor in charge of business books for Prentice Hall, 1957

This saying reminds me to keep an open mind :)

Thank you, twm. Matthew 7:12 should certainly guide us at all times.

Thanks also for the link. Some interesting quotes there, including Bill Gates’ famous “640K should be enough for anybody.” Today MS probably has only a relatively few dll files that are “that small,” and certainly even the simplest PDAs use more memory than that.
