Keener Gets a BlackBerry Curve

August 27, 2007

I got a BlackBerry Curve over the weekend. I’ll review it after spending more time with it, but I must say: if I had known BlackBerry’s were this good, I would have gotten one years ago.

I finally decided against getting an iPhone. No doubt it is a great device, but it does not seem to be as practical as a BlackBerry. For example, if I decide to go with a hosted exchange service I could not do that with an iPhone.

Deciding which BlackBerry to get was not terribly easy. I did decide to go with either Verizon or AT&T, because their coverage is reported to be a bit better than T-Mobile’s, and I thought I would go with Verizon. Since some of my consulting work could put in the middle of Nebraska, coverage is important to me. The consumer reports I have studied suggest that Verizon has the best coverage and call quality (for the US). But the local Verizon store helped me decide to go to AT&T by coming across as remarkably disinterested and by not being able to answer basic questions, such as how the battery life of their various BlackBerry models compared. So, I went a half-mile to the AT&T store, got great service, got to thoroughly test out different models (including making calls to check call quality), and was very impressed with the BlackBerry Curve.

I still have the T-Mobile Dash, but part of my strategy has been to eliminate having two cellphone bills (I’ve had AT&T for years and added T-Mobile in March, primarily to get the Dash). I have six months left on the T-Mo contract, so I will look at how much it costs to just cancel it. If not prohibitive, I will cancel it, have it unlocked, and either keep it as a backup to the BlackBerry Curve or I may just sell it.
