LapTop Mag Gives Thumbs Up to BlackBerry Vs WM6

by Bruce Keener on July 9, 2007

LAPTOP Mag has published a comparison of BlackBerry versus Windows Mobile 6.

While WM6 has the edge on third-party applications, the BlackBerry comes out on top.

Now that my WM6-upgraded Dash no longer suffers from an alarm ailment, I am a little less miffed with WinMo. In fact, there are a lot of things I like about WinMo. But, my friend Thomas, a WinMo enthusiast in many respects, has been giving me suggestions that my next phone should be a BlackBerry. Thanks to the LAPTOP article, I have a better appreciation of where he is coming from.

And, I am reminded that at least 90 percent of the business professionals I know use BlackBerry’s. Many of them do so because that is what their IT organizations chose. But, some of these own their own businesses and they choose what hardware and software to use.

Regardless, I plan to take more time in deciding whether to get a BlackBerry. My inner geek wants an iPhone, but my practical nature tells me that not being able to use it with a hosted exchange is too much of a drawback for me. I may just stick with my Dash. Time will tell.

What do you think of the LAPTOP mag comparison? Have you made a switch from one platform to another, and what did you gain or lose in doing it?

Bruce,

As you know, I feel forced to use a Blackberry due to problems I”ve had with WM5 syncing every 15 minutes with AOL and/or Yahoo. I would have problems with both accounts and sending emails from the Cingular 8125 and the Treo 750 where people would tell me they never saw them. I currently am forced to carry a Blackberry Pearl due to seamless push email because it is 100% reliable. I also carry my Dell Axim x50v. I still need to learn more about how well hosted exchange server works & if my info. would be safe, but no one writes about this, not PocketPCmag, or any other source that I know of.

For now, 2 devices is the only way for me. I long for the day they come out with a Treo that has 3 new items: 1) 320×320 display, 2) Reliable email, & 3) Fast processor / plenty of memory.

Hi Mike,

Great to hear from you again!

I need to learn more about the security of hosted exchange as well, but I am close to taking the plunge on it, as an experiment if nothing else. I’m looking seriously at MailStreet.

Thomas and I talked earlier this evening and he gave me several reasons to further consider the BlackBerry, with reliability being of course near the top of the list, but the apps are also extremely easy to use. Interesting that you mention the x50v as he and I agreed that they are hard to beat for ebook reading, but that you can always carry one around for that. And, the BlackBerry’’s with the larger screens are probably decent for ebook reading, too. eReader is not available for them but MobiPocket is, and I have several MobiPocket books.

I am thinking about getting the BlackBerry Curve from AT&T. The trackball interface sounds great.

Thomas mentioned that there are BB simulators around to try out, so I will tinker with one of those (I think one can be downloaded from the BB site.)

I love a lot of things about the WinMo interface, but it sure causes frustrations for a lot of people. Example: I read on one site today about some poor chap’s bad experiences with Windows Mobile Live Messenger initially duplicating all of his contacts, and later deleting all of them: he lost ALL of his contact info due to the app.

Anyway, I’ve got my work cut out for me in transitioning to the new domain so this is a back burner item for me for right now, but it sure is good to see you commenting again.
