Organizing Programs on a Pocket PC: Part 2 of 2

by Bruce Keener on June 5, 2007

In the Part 1 of this two-part series, we talked about using a Program Launcher as a time-saving tool for you. Here in Part 2, we talk about how you can accomplish much the same thing without incurring the “memory penalty” that a launcher can have. You can use a file manager to organize the programs within your device’s Windows Start Menu folder. On my Dell x51v, the result of doing so looks like this:

To get this screen, I just select Programs from my Pocket PC’s Start Menu. If I want to launch Word Mobile, I then just tap the “Apps” folder, where I have moved the links for Word Mobile and a half dozen other apps, and then I tap “Word Mobile.”

To set this up, I used Resco Explorer, which is a great replacement for the standard File Explorer that comes on your device. Among other things, it lets you see files that would be hidden from you with the File Explorer. Note from the following that its menu has a “Favorites” option which includes two favorites: “My Documents” and “Start Menu.” Selecting the “Start Menu” option yields the following:

All you have to do at this point is to create the new folders you want under the “Programs” folder in the Start Menu. You can see I have already setup the following folders: Apps, Media, Tools, and zzz (which I use to hide all the built-in programs I don’t use, like File Manager). The Games folder is there by default. Of course, instead of using the folder names that I use, you could easily use different names.

So, as you can see, you don’t have to stare at a long list of program icons when you want to run a program. You can use any of a number of program launchers or you can spend a few minutes with a good File Explorer replacement and set up your own program folders.

I have this to be a great method for launching programs, yet it does not cost me the memory penalty of a launcher.

Do you use a similar, or better, technique? Let us know how you manage your programs.
