Have a Great Memorial Day Weekend (Plus: help me with site design)

in Miscellaneous

For those readers outside the US who might not know, the US has a holiday this weekend: Memorial Day, which is celebrated on Monday.

So, for all those who are taking the holiday: Have A Great One!

I will likely not post again until the holiday is over (that is, until Tuesday morning), but will check for comments periodically. My dogs and I are just going to relax.

Update: I’ve deleted some text that was here. The text requested your input on which theme design would be best for the site. (I’ve included a picture of the deleted text below the “Read more” link if you would like to see what was here.) I’ve temporarily switched to the Blue Zinfandel theme as default. I’ll leave the theme switcher up for a day or two, so let me know if you like one of the other themes.

Finally, I’ve added a plugin that is supposed to let you subscribe to comments if you’d like (if you want to subscribe to the comments on a particular post). I’ve seen this in use at a few other sites and have put it to use to subscribe to comments on those sites, and it works fine. I think you have to make a comment first for it to subscribe you, which I have done with the other sites, but I would expect you would want to do that anyway.

Again, my wishes for a great holiday to everyday who is taking it and a great weekend to all of you!

Here is a picture of the text that I deleted:

Hi Bruce,

I found you through a comment over on the Copyblogger theme demo site, and after testing out your theme changer I say that this one definately looks best! :)

In fact, using your changer has helped me decide that I’d also like to use this theme - it’s really nice and clear with big titles for posts - just what I need. Going to try to customise it too - hope that’s easy to do.

Thanks for the great theme switcher!

Michelle

Hi Michelle,

Thank you so much for the input. Copyblogger is definitely a very clean design. I’m personally struggling between it and Blue Zinfandel, leaning toward the latter because I like its three column design and it is also very clean. I also very much like the Digg style, although I would probably customize it a bit more. But, all the themes are still in the running and this is a very hard choice for me to make, so I appreciate all input.

Thanks again and take care,
Bruce

Thanks, David.
I may stick with Copyblogger, because it is so readable. I am intrigued by three-column designs, though, because they allow me to add more information, such as popular posts, and other information-type items. There isn’t room for all I would like to add to the sidebars. But, I may just have to forget about that.

I would appreciate anyone letting me know about other really readable three column themes.

In the interim, I am displaying the Copyblogger left-column theme as the default. It is to me the most readable of them all, and readability and usability are primary factors for my design choice.

For IE users and Firefox 1.5 users, Please let me know if this left-column theme causes you any problems. I’ve personally tested it in IE7, Firefox, and Safari, but I do not have access to IE6 or Firefox 1.5

Update:Finally, one thing I try to be very consciousness of is your viewing experience. The Copyblogger theme is about 800 pixels wide, while almost all of you have resolutions that exceed 1000 pixels wide. Many have resolutions that exceed 1600 pixels and some even have resolutions that exceed 2500 pixels. Today, at nearly the end of the day, there has been 1, just 1, viewer who has used a 800×600 screen. While I would lose that reader if I went to a wider theme (such as a typical 970 pixel theme, for example), that means most of you are seeing the blog taking up only part of your screen, and I suspect many of you want a wider theme. That is why I am so interested in hearing from you about what themes look the best and even for your recommendations. My main job is to provide you with good, useful, thought-provoking content. But, a part of my job is to ensure that your viewing experience is the best I can make it, too.
