Upcoming T-Mobile Dash Upgrade to Windows Mobile 6

by Bruce Keener on April 29, 2007

Update: I subsequently installed the WM6 upgrade, and discuss it in First Impressions of WM6 Upgrade.

———-

Gadgets On The Go has a post about T-Mobile offering a WM6 upgrade during the week of April 30! Whenever it does become available, I’ll install it and give a report on it. The referenced link indicates that the update they obtained only took about 10 minutes to install … impressive. Looks like it has some nice enhancements, and that it will also include Office Mobile.

I’ve installed the Dash update, and the process went without a hitch. I installed our company’s exchanger server push certificate and contacts, calendar, and tasks all synced up no problem. I’ve just started playing around with it so I’ll post more info later.

Mike,

Fantastic! I look forward to installing it myself. Is it on the T-Mobile Website? If so, I’ll probably install sometime tomorrow afternoon.

I really look forward to hearing more from you on it.

As of May 1, the update is not on the T-Mobile website. I found my update via a link on the Howard Forums. Here is the link to the thread: http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1153646. Rumor is Tmobile is releasing the official update on May 4.

WM6 has a nice Windows Vista look to it using features similar to Aero. A version of Office Mobile is now included. I downloaded a Excel spreadsheet and it looks great on the phone. As I mentioned, the syncronization with our exchange server works just fine. However, I cannot sync directly with my laptop because activesync 4.5 needs to be installed. Our IT department is still only officially supporting Activesync 4.1!

I set up my Yahoo email and I did not like the settings the phone chose for me. It went with IMAP4. Downloading was problematic with that setting, so I deleted that account and set up a POP account. Now it works great. Email now supports HTML which is cool.

One other useful feature is that you can now use the keyboard to type in alphanumeric numbers into the phone. For example, you can type 800-compusa (I don’t know if that number really works) and the phone translates the letters into the corresponding numbers. Very cool!

So, that’s about it for now. I’ll continue playing but I’ll tell you, it’s like getting a brand new phone!

Mike,
This is a great summary of your initial experiences with WM6. Thank you so much for taking the time to share this with us.
I hope your IT folks will soon switch to ActiveSync 4.5 so you can get max benefit out of your Dash (I *love* the Dash, BTW).
Really neat to be able to combine numbers and letters when calling: I could have used that yesterday when calling my ISP about bad internet connections.

Thanks again.

Paco,

Back when I used exchange server and a WM5 device (Treo 700w), there was a registry hack that was needed to overcome the certificate problem. You can find info on it here:

http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_Registry

(This link has several registry hacks — just search for the one that mentions certificate.)

Note that this hack applied to WM5 and might or might not work on WM6. Could be worth a shot, though.

Let me know if it works for you (or if it doesn’t).
