A free boot recovery tool for Macs

A couple of websites have mentioned a freeware utility called DasBoot, which you can use to save enough info from your Mac to an iPod (for example) to use the iPod to boot a Mac that’s gone belly up.

Apparently, you can use a variety of devices as a boot alternative, including iPods and flashdrives. When I had to repair my iMac’s drive, I just used the startup CDs and accompanying utilities. But, then I have an iMac instead of a MacBook, so it is easy for me to always have the startup CDs at hand. I can well imagine that MacBook users could find DasBoot to be useful to have around.
