Google and Windows Live for PDAs (Updated)

March 28, 2007

Google continues to develop useful products for the mobile worker. They recently released an update to their search page for PDAs. I do not know how well it works with Blackberrys, not having one myself, but it works fine on my Smartphone and other PDAs. This new search version now automatically includes not only web pages but images, news, and more.

Microsoft also continues its move into mobile device space with Windows Live Search for Mobile. You can download the software directly from this link using your mobile device and then install it without having to use your desktop. The following screenshot gives a peak at some of its capabilities, indicating what broad topics the search includes.

Live Search on a Dash

Within the Categories section are several choices, such as Restaurant, Nightlife, Health & Fitness, and so on. I tested out the Restaurant category and it gave me a good listing of local restaurants you can specify what type restaurant you’re looking for). I also tested the Traffic element and it showed the local traffic situation in my area (more “greens” than I would have thought).

Update: It may be a coincidence, but my email stopped working after installing Windows Live Search for Mobile on my T-Mobile Dash. Stayed this way for about 4 hours, at which time I decided to uninstall Windows Live Search to see if it would have an impact. I uninstalled it, reset the device, and then my Dash received email fine. Like I said, I really suspect that this was a coincidence and not a problem cause by WLS (which I had turned off for most of this period), and shouldn’t keep you from experimenting with it … but, if you have email problems uninstalling Windows Live Search might be advisable.

Anyone else have this problem?
